Canadian Money

A loonie a twonie and a five....

The bottom coin is a “loonie”…..it’s worth 1 dollar (and has a loon on it.) The top coin is a “twonie”….worth 2 dollars. On the back of the 5 dollar bill kids are engaging in winter sports…. One of the kids has a 9 on his sweater…..Gordie Howe’s number or as he is known in Canada….”Mr Hockey”.

Sue:  I think the twonie is great and the loonie is convenient but I suppose it must be hard for a man to carry all those coins.  When I did the laundry Sunday, each washing machine needed 3 loonies ( I had four machines) and the dryers needed 2 loonies so it cost about $18 all together.  One of the women said, “By the time we finish this caravan we can all buy our own washers and dryers.”  When we go to most of the stores in Canada we have to be sure to bring our eco bags as they charge five cents for plastic bags.  There are some stores that are more economical but most are higher for everything.  When you take a cart you have to put a quarter in a slot and when you return the cart you get it back.  Today we visited a Safeway store and it was like being back home.  It had the same flooring in the produce department and Starbucks and I used my card for discount.  Malcolm and I were comparing sunrise and sunset times:  Dover sunrise was 5:28 am and sunset was 8:48 pm.  Dawson Creek sunrise was 5:32 am and sunset was 10:38 pm.  However, Fairbanks’ sunrise was 3:38 am and sunset was 12:09 am.  This is what we look forward to in a few days.

  1. What’s the exchange rate up there now? Don’t they make Airstreams with laundry rooms?

Good luck with sleeping, hope you brought some blackout shades with you.

  2. Good to hear from you. Enjoy the rest of your Alaskan adventure and have safe travels. Sounds like a wonderful trip. Stay well, have fun, and enjoy the rest of your Alaskan adventure. Sorry we can’t do it again, too.
