Going North…Kiskatinaw Bridge…

Kiskatinaw Bridge

Us...at Mile zero...1400 to go...
The bridge...Mom & Chuck on it...
Lunch break South of Fort Nelson....Alaska Highway

Wednesday we started up the Alaskan Highway. About 17 miles from Dawson Creek we took a short loop road that took us over the last original timber bridge on the highway, build by the Army in 1942. It is also unique in that it’s curved. It was by-passed and a new bridge was constructed in 1978 because the weight limit was to low. We would have crossed it on the 1967 trip….. Going down the winding, unpaved approach to the Kiskatinaw bridge gave you a feeling of what the highway was like in 1967. In the 70’s and 80’s oil and gas fields were being developed, this required a better and straighter road with higher capacity bridges. During those years, and up to the present, new bridges were built, pavement was put down and thousands of curves were straightened. So…..the highway is great for travel and much easier on your equipment…..but the “adventure” is gone.  About 11 am we crosesed a major obstacle during  construction in 1942…the Peace River. We arrived in Fort Nelson, BC about mid afternoon.
